Chancellor Hall · 1978 research

999 — 15 October 1978

A useful secondary-evidence Chancellor Hall research record for 999. The date is now supported by contemporary 1978 music-paper tour advertising as well as independent later venue chronologies. No ticket or surviving Chelmsford Rocks artefact has yet been matched in the collection.

Sunday 15 October 1978

999 — Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford

Contemporary Record Mirror and Sounds tour advertising both place 999 at Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford on 15 October 1978. Southend Punk Rock History, 45cat and the Punk Music Catalogue independently give the same date. The agreement between contemporary tour publicity and later venue chronologies is substantially stronger than a later listing alone.

Status: established contemporary/secondary evidence; not ticket-backed.

What is still missing

No surviving Chelmsford Rocks ticket, poster, local newspaper advert, photograph or first-hand memory has yet been matched to this particular 999 date. The contemporary tour adverts establish that the date was publicly booked/listed, while the archive still treats a surviving local artefact or first-hand attendance memory as the next step toward the strongest confirmation.

The archive therefore keeps the date as a research record rather than pretending that the secondary listings are equivalent to primary evidence.

Why it is worth keeping

999 were already part of the Chancellor Hall punk circuit, and this date sits in the same late-1978 run as Radio Stars, Deep Throats and Penetration. It is a good candidate for ticket and memory hunting, especially because the archive is now deliberately checking whether apparently simple gig-list entries can be strengthened or contradicted by surviving local evidence.

Evidence rule: independent secondary agreement makes a useful research record, but a primary artefact or first-hand Chelmsford memory is still preferred before calling the date fully confirmed.
