The Army & Navy
A source-based history of one of Chelmsford's important later live music venues, built from the surviving Chelmsford Rocks interview with former promoter Sean Hudson.
How the promotion started
Sean Hudson describes moving from punk/Oi! fanzine work and record mail order into promotion. In 1992 he originally booked a Heavy Metal Kids show at Chelmsford YMCA, then moved the December 11 show to the Army & Navy.
Early bookings
The interview recalls bookings including Glen Matlock, UK Subs, The Exploited, 999, Peter & The Test Tube Babies, Anti-Nowhere League and Splodge. The venue expanded from two weekly nights into a broader programme of indie, punk and rock.
Oasis, 1994
The interview gives a detailed recollection of Oasis playing in 1994. It states that 350 tickets had sold in advance despite an official capacity of 260, and names Elemental Child as support.
Musical range
The A&N programme went well beyond rock and punk: Junior Jump, The Beat, Selecter, Bad Manners, Bush Fire, Judge Dread, The Meteors, Nine Below Zero, Dr Feelgood, AOR, folk metal, tribute acts and metal are all mentioned.
Later years
The interview recalls Kula Shaker, Stereophonics, Headswim, Super Furry Animals, Idlewild, Elastica, Longpigs, Wishbone Ash, Feeder, Sleeper, The Mission and others, alongside local acts including The Filaments, The Big, AC Slater, Thaed, Tellercreep, ISM, Garp, The Kites and Vybe Trybe.
Closing night
The source says the Army & Navy closed in October 2002. Its last gig was on 20 October 2002, with The Big topping the bill and more than 800 people attending.
Photographs & source material
The source PDF contains photographs of the building, promotional material and images connected with the venue. The source is retained in the archive, with provenance recorded where it is relevant to the material shown here.
Undated CD compilation
A supplied Yeah Right! Vol 1 cover associates a seventeen-track Essex bands compilation with the Army & Navy Music Venue. No date or individual gig details are visible, so it is recorded as memorabilia rather than dated events.
Important archive note
This page summarises a first-person interview. Statements about attendance, dates, bookings and memories are presented as the source's recollections unless independently corroborated elsewhere in the archive. Where the wider archive disagrees, the differing sources should remain visible rather than being silently reconciled.
