Artist ↔ event evidence

Artist ↔ Event Corroboration

This layer asks a narrower question: when an artist appears in a dated Chelmsford event record, what other surviving evidence actually intersects with that artist or event?

Important: corroboration is not a vote-count. Two sources only strengthen a record when they independently address the same claim. A catalogue description, oral-history recollection, ticket, advertisement and later memory are therefore shown by type rather than blended into one “confirmed” category.

Working corroboration table

ArtistDated eventVenueIntersecting evidenceStatus / boundary
The Who23 Jan 1965Corn ExchangePeter Searles oral history discusses The Who as a support act and the Corn Exchange/top bands of the 1960s.Useful independent scene corroboration; the oral history does not itself supply the dated event.
Jimi Hendrix25 Feb 1967Corn ExchangeCorn Exchange venue dossier and wider 1960s scene layer.Dated event remains the principal record; no extra date inferred.
Pink Floyd23 Sep 1967Corn ExchangeCorn Exchange venue dossier and 1960s scene evidence.Event-level record retained separately from general scene context.
The Clash29 May 1977Chancellor HallPaul Cleary and Ian Fortnam oral histories independently describe Chancellor Hall and Chelmsford's punk scene.Strong venue/scene intersection; oral histories do not replace the dated event record.
The Vibrators26 Jun 1977 and separate 7 Jul 1977 entryChancellor HallChancellor Hall event layer, surviving source/index material, and supplied Pure Mania tour poster listing 26 June. The poster directly corroborates 26 June day/month: the “26th” is in the June section of the tour. The separate 7 July record remains distinct and is not silently reconciled away.
The Damned / 9996 Nov 1977Chancellor HallChancellor Hall venue evidence and punk-scene oral-history context.Context supports the venue's punk role; it is not a substitute for the event record.
Buzzcocks / The Slits / John Cooper Clarke12 Mar 1978Chancellor HallChancellor Hall dossier and late-1970s punk oral histories.Event record plus scene context; individual source claims remain distinct.
Generation X9 Oct 1977; 2 Apr 1978Chancellor HallTwo separately documented appearances: 1977 with The Crabs and 1978 with The Jolt.Do not collapse the two dates; the source-PDF Generation X artefact remains undated.
The Undertones11 Mar 1979
3 Jun 1979
Chancellor HallTwo separate 1979 appearances. March is supported by contemporary Record Mirror; June by surviving ticket and independent listings.Keep the two dates separate; do not collapse them into one appearance.
Dr Feelgood7 Nov 1990Chancellor HallPaul Cleary independently recalls seeing Dr Feelgood at Chancellor Hall in 1974.Two separate claims: a 1974 oral-history memory and the 1990 event record. Neither is used to “correct” the other.
Blue RamblersMultiple undated scene referencesOdeon / Shire Hall / Lion and LambJ. Alliston oral history covers bookings, weekly Odeon dances, Shire Hall, Lion and Lamb and the changing local scene.Oral-history scene evidence; not converted into a dated event list without separate records.

What counts as corroboration?

  • Direct intersection: a second source names the same artist, venue and/or event.
  • Venue corroboration: a source independently establishes that the venue was being used for the relevant kind of live music.
  • Scene corroboration: a source establishes the surrounding musical culture but not the individual performance.
  • Object evidence: a surviving ticket, advert or memorabilia item can establish what the object says without proving every historical detail behind it.

What does not count?

  • A later memory cannot silently become a contemporary gig listing.
  • A catalogue entry cannot be treated as if the underlying tape or document has been fully read.
  • A venue association cannot create an artist's missing date.
  • Two conflicting dates should remain visible until a stronger source resolves them.

Archive access boundary

Essex Archives Online describes the archive catalogue but does not provide the full text of every document. ERO states that many records remain undigitised and may require Searchroom access, a copy request or a search.
