Artist source cards

Artist Evidence

Compact evidence cards for named artists and bands. These cards record the source pathway that puts an artist into the archive.

The Who

Primary archive pathway: 23 Jan 1965 event record, Corn Exchange.

Independent context: Peter Searles oral history, SA 15/1/4/1/1, discusses support work involving The Who and the Corn Exchange.

Boundary: the oral history is contextual evidence, not a replacement for the event record.

The Clash

Primary archive pathway: 29 May 1977 event record, Chancellor Hall.

Independent context: Paul Cleary and Ian Fortnam oral histories describe Chancellor Hall and Chelmsford's punk scene.

Boundary: scene context does not create new dated performances.

Dr Feelgood

Primary archive pathways: 7 Nov 1990 event record; separate Paul Cleary recollection of a first attended gig in 1974 at Chancellor Hall.

Boundary: these are two different claims and remain separate.

Blue Ramblers

Source: SA 15/1/4/5/1, J. Alliston oral history.

Scope: band history, bookings, dance halls, Odeon dances and the changing Chelmsford live-music scene.

Boundary: catalogue synopsis is not treated as a complete performance list.

Peter Searles' scene references

Source: SA 15/1/4/1/1.

Useful for the 1950s–60s network of local groups, venues and support acts. The source is an oral history recorded in 2004.

Paul Cleary / Ian Fortnam

Sources: SA 15/1/4/4/1 and SA 15/1/4/12/1.

These are scene-context sources for 1970s punk and later Chelmsford live music. They are deliberately not flattened into a gig chronology.
