Chancellor Hall research

1978 Research Board — v206

What is established

This board is a working snapshot of the 1978 Chancellor Hall research. It deliberately separates strong evidence from dates that still need a local artefact or first-hand memory.

  • 12 January — Penetration / Cyanide: surviving ticket evidence, with a friend's attendance accepted as supporting first-hand evidence.
  • 22 January — Tyla Gang: contemporary Record Mirror evidence plus the site owner's first-hand attendance memory.
  • 5 February — Tonight: contemporary Record Mirror evidence plus the site owner's first-hand attendance memory.
  • 20 February — British Lions: contemporary Record Mirror evidence plus the site owner's first-hand attendance memory.
  • 26 February — Radiators From Space: contemporary/band evidence already recorded in the archive.
  • 28 February — The Enid: contemporary Record Mirror booking evidence.
  • 12 March — Buzzcocks / The Slits: surviving ticket evidence.
  • 21 May — Wilko Johnson's Solid Senders: surviving ticket evidence.
  • 3 September — Radio Stars: surviving ticket evidence; the site owner's memory is that this was their only Chelmsford appearance.
  • 22 October — Sore Throat / Deep Throats: strong contemporary evidence plus the site owner's attendance at the gig.

Still open

  • 16 April — Radiators From Space: remains a research lead from later Chancellor Hall listings. No matching Chelmsford ticket or contemporary local advert has yet been found.
  • 28 May — Pirates / Wilko Johnson's Solid Senders: remains a question-mark listing, separate from the ticket-backed 21 May appearance.
  • 1 October — Doll By Doll / Ultravox: remains a secondary research lead until a contemporary Chelmsford source or surviving local artefact is found.
  • 8 October — The Enid / The End: remains unresolved. Contemporary Record Mirror issues disagree, and the site owner's memory is that both names were advertised but that he attended neither.
  • 15 October — 999: strengthened to contemporary music-paper evidence: Record Mirror and Sounds both list the Chelmsford Chancellor Hall date, with later venue chronologies independently agreeing. Still not ticket-backed.
  • 12 November — Penetration / Cyanide: independently listed/advertised, but kept separate from the ticket-backed 12 January and 13 May records.
  • 3 December — Pere Ubu / Human League: Pere Ubu has contemporary booking evidence; the complete pairing remains more cautiously described.

Research rule

A later gigography is useful for finding a date, but it is not automatically treated as proof that the concert happened. The preferred sequence remains: surviving ticket or other primary artefact; contemporary newspaper or music-paper evidence; independent contemporary/local evidence; later gigography as a research lead. Calendar checks can narrow a year when a ticket gives a weekday and date, but the calendar alone does not prove the concert.

Next targets

The most useful next discoveries would be a surviving ticket, poster, handbill, local newspaper advert or review, photograph, or first-person Chelmsford memory for one of the open dates above. The aim is to strengthen the archive without turning uncertain listings into false certainty.
