Chancellor Hall · date reconciliation

8 October 1978 — The End or Enid?

Archive status

Research discrepancy. A later Chancellor Hall list gives Enid on 8 October 1978, while a contemporary Record Mirror notice gives The End at Chancellor Hall on the same date. The archive will not silently choose between them.

What the sources say

Punk Music Catalogue: lists Enid at Chancellor Hall on 8 October 1978.

Record Mirror, 7 October 1978: lists The End at Chelmsford Chancellor Hall on 8 October, as part of a run including Sheffield on 7 October, Chelmsford on 8 October and other dates later in the month.

Why this matters

This is exactly the kind of discrepancy the archive is designed to preserve. The contemporary notice is strong evidence that The End were booked for the hall, but a booking notice does not by itself prove that the advertised bill actually went ahead. Conversely, the later Enid entry may represent a real show, a replacement booking, a transcription error or another source that has not yet surfaced.

Working decision: neither version is promoted to a confirmed event in the main chronology until a ticket, poster, local newspaper report, photograph or first-hand memory resolves the conflict.

Next evidence target

First-hand Chelmsford memory

The site owner remembers both versions being advertised locally — The Enid and The End — but did not attend either. This is useful evidence that both names were genuinely circulating in Chelmsford publicity, but it does not establish which act actually played on 8 October.

The memory is therefore recorded as audience/publicity evidence, not as proof that both shows happened.

New finding: the contemporary sources conflict too

The discrepancy is stronger than a simple later-database error. Record Mirror’s 30 September 1978 issue gives The Enid at Chelmsford Chancellor Hall on 8 October, while the 7 October issue gives The End at the same venue and date. Both are contemporary publications. This suggests a possible replacement, cancellation or listing error, but the surviving evidence found so far does not establish which explanation is correct.

Archive decision: keep 8 October 1978 unresolved. Do not silently choose The End or The Enid until a local advert, ticket, poster, review, photograph or first-hand Chelmsford recollection resolves the conflict.
