Deep Throats — two Chancellor Hall appearances
The Deep Throats are another useful example of why the archive checks artists for repeat appearances rather than assuming one Chelmsford show was the only one. Two separate Chancellor Hall records can currently be supported: October 1978 and March 1979.
22 October 1978
Sore Throat & The Deep Throats — Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford
Bored Teenagers lists Sore Throat & The Deep Throats at Chancellor Hall on Sunday 22 October 1978. Punk Music Catalogue independently lists the same date and venue as “Deep Throats, Sore Throat”.
Status: established secondary record, and now also supported by first-hand attendance memory from the Chelmsford Rocks archive: the archive contributor who was present at the Chancellor Hall gigs confirms they attended this October 1978 Deep Throats show.
11 March 1979
The Undertones & The Deep Throats — Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford
The 1979 appearance is much better documented in the archive. A contemporary Record Mirror tour notice gives “Chelmsford Chancellor Hall, March 11” for Deep Throat, and Ken Wrigley's first-hand recollection says his band supported the Undertones that March and describes the night as “a blinding night”.
Status: contemporary tour notice + Ken Wrigley's first-hand local memory + first-hand attendance memory from the Chelmsford Rocks archive. The archive contributor confirms they were present at this March 1979 show.
Why the distinction matters
The two dates should not be merged simply because the same local band appears in both. The October 1978 bill is a Deep Throats headline/supporting-package record with Sore Throat; the March 1979 appearance is the Undertones show where Ken Wrigley remembers supporting them.
First-hand attendance: the Chelmsford Rocks archive contributor confirms they were at both of these Chancellor Hall gigs. This is personal attendance evidence, separate from the surviving documentary sources, and is retained as such rather than presented as a ticket or contemporary press source.
The March 1979 material also connects directly to the Chelmsford Rocks archive's first-hand Undertones evidence, including Ken's recollection of having a beer with Fergal at the Lion and Lamb before the band went on stage.
