Gig Review - Joe Jackson in Nashville, Tennessee June 14th
2017. It was with some trepidation that Nicky and I ventured out
on Wednesday evening to see Joe Jackson at the Tennessee
Performing Arts Center (TPAC) in downtown Nashville. Joe has
long been a favorite of mine since first seeing him back in 1979,
but I had not seen him live since I went to the Jumpin' Jive tour at
the Hammersmith Palais with Colin Egleton back in 1982!

We started out at the Fleet Street Pub for a couple of pints of
(well kept) Fullers London Pride and a Shepard's pie to get back
into the English mood! We arrived a few minutes before Joe
came on, starting on his own at the Piano with beautiful versions
of "It's different for girls" and "Home Town". One by one on
subsequent songs the band took to the stage, including Graham
Maby on Bass.

He played a mixture of his best known tunes plus songs from his
latest Album "Fast Forward" (released in 2015) plus a couple of
really good covers "Big Yellow Taxi" played in a New Orleans
honky tonk style and Bob Marley's "Johnny Was" (which I always
enjoyed when covered by Stiff Little Fingers). He also debuted
one new song as yet unrecorded "Fabulousy aboslute". His latest
songs continue with biting social comment and the older songs
seem as relevant today as when they were written in the 70s and
80s.

The rest of the set (which lasted just under 2 hours) comprised :-
"Be my number two", "Fast forward", "Is she really going out
with him", "Real Men", "You can't get what you want until you
know what you want", "Kings of the City", "A little smile",
"Another World","Sunday Papers", "Keep on dreaming", "Ode to
Joy", and "Steppin' out". He encored with "See no evil" and "One
more time" before a final rendition of "A slow song".
A great evening and if you get a chance you should go and see
him. I know this wasn't in Chelmsford but you can take the boy
(and girl) out of Essex but you can't take Essex out of the boy
(and girl)! Cheers.
Julian Dench, June 2017.
