The Outsider — Chancellor Hall, 20 May 1979
A useful new piece of local-band evidence helps explain the complicated supporting bill at the Essex Live night on Sunday 20 May 1979.
The band
The Outsider were an Essex punk band who existed briefly in spring 1979. Their surviving band history names Niki 'Stitch' Berlin, Steve Willis, Kevin Masters and Lee Faust, and gives a complete 1979 gig list of five dates.
Their own surviving history says they played Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford, on Sunday 20 May 1979.
The Chancellor Hall date
The band history gives the bill as Modern English, ADIII, Anorexia, The Outsider and The Lost. It also reproduces an original gig advert for the date.
This is important because earlier archive work had treated the four-band version of the bill as the safer record. The Outsider evidence means the archive should now preserve the five-act version as a serious, separately sourced possibility rather than silently leaving the band out.
Evidence assessment
| Evidence | Status |
|---|---|
| The Outsider band history | Strong secondary / participant-supplied evidence — gives the band's complete 1979 gig list and specifically places them at Chancellor Hall on 20 May 1979. |
| Original gig advert reproduced with the band history | Advert evidence — supports the date and the published bill reproduced by the source. |
| Ian Fortnam oral-history catalogue | Independent local oral-history evidence — identifies the Essex Live gig and names Modern English, AD3 and Anorexia, but does not list every act. |
| Surviving ticket in the Chelmsford Rocks collection | Not yet matched. |
Why the bill stays carefully worded
The archive now has several overlapping records for the same night. Some list Modern English, AD3, Anorexia and The Lost; the Outsider history adds The Outsider. Rather than deleting the older record or pretending every source is identical, Chelmsford Rocks preserves the difference and identifies exactly which source supplies which name.
