Venue Corroboration
This page records where two or more independent evidence streams intersect. It deliberately does not treat repeated venue names as proof that the underlying event details agree.
| Venue / subject | Source intersection | What the intersection supports | Boundary | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corn Exchange | Selected event records + Peter Searles oral history + ERO Chancellor architectural project | The Corn Exchange was a real Chelmsford music venue in the 1960s; surviving oral history also discusses its programme and later demolition, while ERO independently documents the building's architectural provenance. | The architectural source does not prove a concert. The oral-history synopsis does not supply a complete dated gig list. | Corroborated context |
| Chancellor Hall | Dated gig records + Paul Cleary oral history + Ian Fortnam punk oral history | Multiple evidence streams independently place Chancellor Hall inside Chelmsford's live/punk scene and across different periods. | The oral histories are not being used to manufacture dates or complete bills. | Strong context |
| Odeon | Selected 1980 event records + Paul Cleary oral history + Peter Searles oral history | The Odeon appears both in dated event material and in independent participant recollections of Chelmsford popular music. | The oral-history catalogue summaries do not establish every remembered artist or date. | Corroborated context |
| Army & Navy | Sean Hudson interview + Paul Cleary oral history | The Army & Navy appears independently in two oral-history sources, supporting its importance as a live-music venue in the later Chelmsford scene. | Both are oral histories; independent tickets/listings are still needed for individual bookings. | Context only |
| Y Club / YMCA | Y Club listing layer + MR-004 YMCA memorabilia + Paul Cleary oral history | There are separate strands of evidence for music activity associated with the Y/ YMCA name. | These sources do not yet establish that the Y Club and the YMCA object refer to the same venue or period. | Do not merge |
| Civic Theatre | Existing advertised event records + MR-001 surviving ticket | Independent objects support the Civic Theatre as a live-music venue and preserve a further Skin Alley / Hawkwind / Decameron event lead. | MR-001 has no printed year, so it remains an undated object until corroborated. | Partly corroborated |
Strongest current intersections
Chancellor Hall
The strongest pattern is convergence between dated event material and two independent oral-history catalogue descriptions. ERO's Paul Cleary record explicitly covers his first Chancellor Hall gig in 1974 and later gigs; Ian Fortnam's record independently describes Chancellor Hall within Chelmsford's punk scene.
Corn Exchange
Peter Searles' oral history covers the Corn Exchange and its demolition, while ERO's Chancellor project independently establishes the building's architectural record. The selected concert records sit alongside those sources without being conflated with them.
Odeon
The Odeon is supported by selected dated event material plus two independent oral-history catalogue descriptions. This makes the venue context stronger, while still leaving individual gig verification to documentary records.
What is not corroboration
- Two sources repeating the same unverified memory are not automatically independent corroboration.
- A venue appearing in an oral-history catalogue summary does not verify every date or artist named elsewhere.
- A surviving ticket with a missing year does not become dated merely because a similar bill appears in another source.
- A building-history source confirms the building, not a particular concert.
- A search result that fails to find a record is not evidence that the event did not happen.
Archive access boundary
Essex Archives Online describes the records held by ERO but does not provide the full text of every document. ERO says many records have not been digitised; some sound and video can only be accessed in the Searchroom, and some recordings have not yet been catalogued or digitised.
This means the corroboration layer is intentionally incomplete: an apparent gap can be a research-access gap rather than a historical absence.
