Venue Evidence Network
This page maps relationships between individual sources, venues and event records. It is deliberately stricter than a simple cross-reference: a connection is labelled by what the evidence actually supports.
| Source | Venue connection | Event connection | Evidence status | Safe use on the site |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SA 15/1/4/4/1 — Paul Cleary | Chancellor Hall; Odeon; Army & Navy; wider Chelmsford popular-music scene | Context only from the catalogue summary; individual dates require separate evidence | Context | Use for first-person scene history and venue significance; do not turn catalogue wording into a gig chronology. |
| SA 15/1/4/12/1 — Ian Fortnam | Chancellor Hall / punk scene context | Not by itself a dated event source | Context | Use as independent oral-history context alongside documentary event records. |
| Sean Hudson interview | Army & Navy | Named bookings and venue history are first-person recollection | Recollection | Preserve names and memories as interview content; corroborate dates independently before promotion. |
| ERO Chancellor Project | Corn Exchange / building history | None | Building context | Supports the architectural and 1969 boundary; not concert evidence. |
| ERO catalogue / Searchroom guidance | Potentially all venues | Access methodology, not event proof | Access | Explains what can be checked online, in the Searchroom or by copying/search service. |
| MR-001 — Skin Alley / Hawkwind / Decameron | Civic Theatre | Sunday, 7.30 start; year not printed | Lead | Preserve as memorabilia and research lead until independent dating evidence is found. |
Where sources genuinely intersect
Chancellor Hall
Paul Cleary and Ian Fortnam provide independent oral-history context for the venue and its role in Chelmsford's punk/popular-music scene. Existing tickets, flyers and event records remain the proper basis for individual dates.
Corroborated context
Corn Exchange
The architectural archive establishes the building and its 1969 demolition boundary. The site's concert records establish selected performances. These sources complement each other but do not corroborate one another's individual concert claims.
Complementary evidence
Odeon
Selected event records and Paul Cleary's oral-history catalogue summary both point to the Odeon as an active music venue. The oral history remains contextual rather than a substitute for individual event documentation.
Context + event layer
Army & Navy
Sean Hudson's interview is a strong first-person source for the venue's promotional history and remembered bookings. The next step is independent documentary extraction before building a full dated chronology.
Needs documentary corroboration
Connections deliberately not made
- Y Club and YMCA are not merged merely because both names contain “Y”.
- MR-001 is not assigned a year from the surrounding Civic Theatre chronology.
- Oral-history catalogue summaries are not converted into individual gig records.
- Scene-context names are not automatically promoted to artist/event pages.
- An archive catalogue hit is not treated as proof of the contents of the underlying document unless the document itself has been examined.
Research access boundary
Essex Archives Online describes archive items but not necessarily their full contents. ERO says many records remain undigitised; recordings may be available online, in the Searchroom, or only by contacting the office when they have not yet been catalogued or digitised.
