Bethnal — March 1979 date discrepancy

Working research record. The archive is not silently choosing between conflicting later listings. Contemporary evidence currently points to 18 March 1979, while a later Bored Teenagers listing gives 25 March 1979.

18 March 1979 — stronger contemporary evidence

Record Mirror dated 24 February 1979 gives Bethnal's March tour dates and explicitly places Chelmsford Chancellor Hall on March 18. A contemporary Smash Hits issue from 8 March 1979 also places Bethnal at Chelmsford Chancellor in its Sunday March 18 listings. These two contemporary sources independently point to 18 March.

Assessment: strong contemporary evidence, but no surviving Chelmsford ticket or local newspaper artefact has yet been matched.

25 March 1979 — conflicting later listing

Bored Teenagers currently lists Bethnal & The Next at The Chancellor Hall on Sunday 25 March 1979. That is useful evidence, but it conflicts with the two contemporary tour/listing sources above. The archive therefore does not create a second Bethnal appearance from the later listing alone.

Assessment: unresolved date conflict / research lead, not a confirmed second show.

First-hand attendance memory

The site owner remembers seeing Bethnal at Chancellor Hall in this 1979 research context. This is valuable first-hand evidence that a Bethnal show at the venue took place, but the site owner cannot now confirm the exact date. The memory is therefore recorded separately from the date evidence rather than being used to choose 18 March or 25 March.

Archive assessment: attendance is supported by first-hand memory; the exact 1979 date is now strongly supported as 18 March, although the surviving local artefact is still missing.

Why the distinction matters

This is exactly the sort of date problem the Chancellor Hall Sunday sweep is designed to catch. A later gig database can preserve a useful memory of a show while still carrying a shifted or duplicated date. Here the contemporary material gives us a much stronger starting point for 18 March, but the surviving local evidence still needs to be found before the archive calls the matter closed.

Next evidence target

A surviving Bethnal ticket, poster, handbill, local newspaper advert/report, photograph or first-person Chelmsford memory tied specifically to 18 March would resolve the question. If evidence for 25 March turns up as well, the archive can then test whether the later 25 March listing is a second appearance or a date transcription error.
