Chancellor Hall — Contemporary Press Evidence

A compact register of music-paper notices found during the archive build. These notices are valuable because they were published close to the advertised concert date, but a booking notice is still not the same thing as proof that the concert actually took place.

1978

22 January — Tyla Gang

8 October — The Enid / The End discrepancy

Record Mirror, 30 September and 7 October 1978. The two contemporary issues disagree: the earlier issue lists The Enid at Chelmsford Chancellor Hall; the later issue lists The End at the same venue and date. The archive deliberately leaves this unresolved.

22 October — Sore Throat

Record Mirror, 7 October 1978. The contemporary notice gives Sore Throat at Chelmsford Chancellor Hall on October 22. Independent venue evidence pairs them with The Deep Throats, and the site owner remembers attending.

How to use this register

Contemporary press evidence is treated as a major research layer, especially when it names both venue and date before the event. It does not automatically prove attendance, the final bill, or that a planned booking was not cancelled or replaced. Where a surviving ticket, poster, photograph or first-hand memory exists, the archive records those separately and explains how they interact with the press notice.
