A useful distinction: ticket versus advert
The Chancellor Hall source PDF also contains a separate Tony Rupp promotional advert for a Sunday May 29th show. That is not the surviving Clash ticket. The current Clash event record remains 27 May 1977 because the surviving ticket and Maurice Hyde’s Flickr source directly support 27 May.
The May 29 advert is therefore preserved as a separate promotional artefact and as part of the explanation for why 29 May appears in older archive material. It must not be silently treated as the ticket date.
Calendar method
The calendar is a filter, not proof on its own. For example, a ticket reading “Sunday 12 March” narrows the likely year to 1978 within the relevant period; “Sunday 3 June” points to 1979; and “Sunday 13 May” points to 1979. Each of those conclusions is stronger when an independent gig listing or contemporary advertisement agrees.
This method is now part of the Chancellor Hall research trail so future yearless tickets can be handled consistently.
