Ticket Matching Board
This board records surviving ticket artefacts identified in the Chancellor Hall source catalogue and shows what has, and has not, been matched to a dated event record. It is deliberately conservative: a ticket proves that the ticket artefact exists and may provide date, venue, billing or price evidence, but the archive should not add details the ticket itself does not establish.
Matched or substantially matched
- Penetration / Cyanide — 12 January 1978 — surviving ticket confirmed by the site owner as genuine; the owner did not attend but reports that a friend did. This is retained as a separate appearance from the later Penetration ticket and advert.
- The Clash — 27 May 1977 — surviving ticket; current event record uses 27 May 1977. Maurice Hyde’s Flickr source independently supports the ticket date. The separate Tony Rupp May 29 promotional advert is retained as an advert artefact, not treated as the ticket date.
- The Damned + 999 — 6 November 1977 — surviving 90p ticket, No. 187; ticket wording includes “Playing for free”.
- The Undertones — 3 June 1979 — surviving original ticket No. 021. The ticket says “Sunday, June 3rd”; June 3 was not a Sunday in 1977 or 1978, and independent listings place the event on 3 June 1979.
- Radio Stars — 3 September 1978 — surviving ticket No. 333 explicitly prints the full date, venue, time and “Radio Stars plus support”. Independent gig indexes corroborate the date.
- Wilko Johnson / Solid Senders — 21 May 1978 — surviving advert/ticket material; printed wording is preserved separately from the archive’s preferred band spelling.
Ticket artefacts needing careful matching
- Penetration — Sunday 13 May, year not printed — the pink ticket is real surviving evidence, but the ticket itself does not print a year. The source sheet caption says “Penetration Ticket 1978”, while 13 May 1979 was a Sunday. This is now treated as an unresolved year question, not as proof of 1978.
- Penetration — 12 November 1978 — a separate surviving advert is explicitly dated Sunday 12 November 1978. Keep this appearance separate from the May ticket unless further evidence links them.
- Buzzcocks — Sunday 12 March — surviving ticket matches the day/month of the existing 12 March 1978 event record; the ticket itself does not print the year.
- The Undertones — old “1978” label — retained as provenance only; the ticket wording and calendar check support 3 June 1979.
- The Clash — 1977 — now matched to 27 May 1977; retain the source trail rather than creating a second Clash event.
Printed ticket wording
The new Ticket Transcription Register records the wording visible on the surviving ticket images before calendar matching or external corroboration is applied.
Research rule
Where more than one ticket, advert or date exists, appearances are kept separate until the evidence shows they are the same event. Where a surviving ticket contradicts a secondary or legacy date, the discrepancy is recorded rather than silently erased.
Next steps
Penetration / Cyanide — 12 January 1978 evidence record
- Record 3 September 1978 Radio Stars as a dated ticket-matched event.
- Record 13 May 1979 as the current best-supported date for the Sunday 13 May Penetration ticket, while retaining the yearless wording of the ticket itself.
- Keep the 12 November 1978 Penetration advert as a separate dated appearance.
- Retain the Buzzcocks ticket as supporting evidence for the 12 March 1978 event while noting that the ticket itself is yearless.
- Check whether any additional Chancellor Hall ticket images survive elsewhere in the archive.
