Undertones Ticket — Calendar Check
A small but important correction: the surviving pink ticket is labelled in the old source catalogue as “Undertones 1978”, but the ticket itself is printed SUNDAY, JUNE 3rd.
What the ticket actually shows
- Venue: The Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford
- Date wording: Sunday, June 3rd
- Act: The Undertones
- Support: Bar
- Ticket number: 021
- The ticket does not print a year.
Calendar test
| Year | 3 June falls on | Compatible? |
|---|---|---|
| 1977 | Friday | No |
| 1978 | Saturday | No |
| 1979 | Sunday | Yes |
| 1980 | Tuesday | No |
This is the same research principle now used for the yearless Buzzcocks and Penetration tickets: the printed weekday narrows the possible year before we look for independent confirmation.
Independent confirmation
The calendar result is supported by the surviving Chancellor Hall gig listings, which place The Undertones + The Deep Throats at Chancellor Hall on 3 June 1979. The 45cat venue history also lists The Undertones at Chancellor Hall on that date.
What was wrong with the old label?
The surviving source PDF caption calls the item “Undertones 1978 Ticket”. That wording is preserved because it is part of the artefact's provenance, but it is not accepted as the date. The ticket itself says Sunday June 3rd, and June 3 was not a Sunday in 1978.
This is a good example of why the archive should distinguish between what an old catalogue calls an artefact and what the artefact itself actually says.
Archive conclusion
Preferred event date: 3 June 1979. Status: strongly supported by the surviving ticket wording, calendar compatibility and independent Chancellor Hall listings. The old “1978” caption remains in the provenance trail but is treated as a catalogue error.
