Chancellor Hall research layer
Artefact Research Board
A controlled research board for Chancellor Hall artefacts that survive in the archive but are not yet safe to turn into complete event records. The purpose is to make the next research steps visible without quietly converting labels, adverts or memorabilia into asserted gig dates.
Evidence rule
A printed date on an artefact is recorded as an artefact fact. A named act without a date is retained as an undated lead. A dated event record requires separate corroboration where the archive does not itself establish the full event details. Tickets, adverts and magazine material remain evidence even when the corresponding event page is not yet reconstructed.
Dated artefact labels
- Dr Feelgood — 1975 — source-PDF label; requires event-level corroboration before being treated as a dated Chancellor Hall gig.
- The Clash — 1977 / White Riot Tour — surviving tour/magazine material; compare with the current 27 May 1977 event record; the older 29 May date is retained only as a legacy discrepancy.
- The Fantoms — 1982 — surviving source-PDF label; date is an artefact label, not yet a complete event reconstruction.
- Radio Stars — 3 September 1978 — surviving ticket explicitly prints the date and ticket number 333; now matched to the event record.
- Chelmsford Punks — May 1977 — surviving artefact wording; retain as a research lead until the underlying event is independently established.
Undated / partially dated leads
- Cockney Rebel
- Heavy Metal Kids
- Ghost Dance
- Bill Nelson
- The Wolfgang Press — c/o Steve Clark
- From The Jam — Evoke
- Generation X — the source PDF artefact remains undated, but separate dated Chancellor Hall appearances are now documented for 9 October 1977 and 2 April 1978.
- Chancellor Hall adverts
- Live Recording
- Pure Mania advertisement
These remain deliberately undated here unless the archive has separately established a dated event. Their presence in the source PDF is evidence that the artefacts survive, not proof of a particular Chelmsford performance date. Generation X is a useful example: the artefact is undated, while two separate performances are independently documented.
Ticket-specific evidence
The source catalogue separately identifies surviving ticket artefacts for The Clash (1977), The Damned (1977), Penetration, Wilko Johnson (1978), The Undertones (1978) and Buzzcocks. The Penetration ticket itself is printed for Sunday 13 May but carries no year; a separate Penetration advert is explicitly dated 12 November 1978. These are kept as separate artefacts and research leads.
Research priority order
- Match each dated artefact label against an independent listing, surviving ticket or event record.
- Match undated named acts against the source library and venue/event crosswalk.
- Keep separate appearances separate when more than one date or artefact exists.
- Only promote a lead into the main Chancellor Hall chronology when the evidence supports the specific claim being made.
