Flickr Primary Sources

A local index of Flickr material published by Maurice Hyde under the account name themaninthejar. Each source now has a Chelmsford Rocks page with relevant archive images and any retained source notes or recollections.

Research rule: Flickr material is treated as source evidence and personal testimony. A caption can identify an artefact or provide a recollection, but the site keeps the distinction between a photographed object, a remembered event and a independently corroborated date.

Chancellor Hall & 1977 punk sources

The Clash — White Riot Tour ticket

Maurice Hyde's Flickr page shows a surviving Chancellor Hall ticket and identifies the White Riot Tour line-up as The Clash with Subway Sect, The Slits and The Prefects. The Flickr title gives the ticket date as 27 May 1977. This is important because the surviving ticket and Flickr title establish 27 May 1977 as the current archive date. An older 29 May entry is retained only as a legacy-source discrepancy.

Chelmsford Punks — Clash gig photo

Maurice Hyde Flickr item reproduces a September 1977 Sunday Times Magazine image, with the caption identifying Martin Reid, Gary McDowell, Pete Frostick and Mick Bartlett and placing the photograph at a Chancellor Hall Clash gig.

The Damned + 999 — Chancellor Hall ticket

A Flickr source identifies the surviving ticket as the Chancellor Hall return appearance by The Damned after the City Rock 77 problem. The caption describes a 90p charge to cover hall costs and links the event with 999. This supports the existence and nature of the surviving ticket evidence while leaving the exact event chronology to the wider source check.

City Rock 77

The Flickr record gives a detailed first-person account of the 17 September 1977 festival, including the advertised line-up, ticket prices, the non-appearance of The Damned, and the later Chancellor Hall return. It is a valuable oral-history source and a lead for matching the surviving ticket and poster material.

Other Chelmsford source leads

Corn Exchange — The Who

The Flickr page records The Who at Chelmsford Corn Exchange on 28 Nov 1964, 23 Jan 1965 and 4 Dec 1965, and contains a useful historical comment correcting another Chelmsford date. This is a strong candidate for cross-checking the existing Corn Exchange chronology.

Army & Navy — promoter interview

Maurice Hyde's interview with former promoter Sean Hudson contains detailed recollections about the venue's opening years, bookings, promoters, genres and final 2002 show. It should be treated as oral history and cross-checked against surviving programmes, posters and listings.

Research priorities created by this source pass

  1. Preserve the 27 May 1977 Clash date as the current archive record, with the older 29 May entry retained only as a documented legacy discrepancy.
  2. Match the Damned/999 90p ticket against the Chancellor Hall event record and any surviving poster/flyer.
  3. Cross-reference the City Rock 77 account with the festival's surviving ticket, poster and programme material.
  4. Search the wider themaninthejar photostream for additional Chelmsford tickets, flyers and venue stories, then add only source-backed matches to the event database.
  5. Use the Flickr comments as leads to investigate corrections and attendee memories, rather than treating every comment as independently verified fact.
Image filter: Army & Navy flyover, roundabout, road, traffic and demolition photographs are excluded because they have nothing to do with the Army & Navy music venue. See the Flickr Image Filter.
