The Undertones + The Deep Throats — March 1979 Comments
Personal recollection and surviving tour-advert evidence for the 11 March 1979 Chancellor Hall appearance.
Ken Wrigley — The Deep Throats
“My band the Deep Throats supported them in March to promote our single. It was a blinding night.”
“Had a beer with Fergal in the Lion and Lamb before we went on stage.”
The second comment was followed by Ken adding: “My typing — meant Fergal.” The archive keeps the story as a first-hand recollection rather than presenting the pub encounter as independently verified.
Surviving tour advertisement
A surviving newspaper cutting headed “UNDERTONES BRANCH OUT” lists the band's March tour dates and includes Chelmsford Chancellor Hall (11). The article says the Undertones had lined up the tour to promote their current single, “Get Over You”.
How this fits the event record
The March appearance is independently documented as 11 March 1979, with The Deep Throats supporting. The contemporary Record Mirror tour notice also lists Chelmsford Chancellor Hall on March 11. Ken Wrigley's recollection adds first-hand context from the support band itself.
Why the personal comment matters
The archive now has three different kinds of evidence for this appearance: a contemporary tour advertisement, later independent gig listings, and a first-hand recollection from a member of the supporting band. They are kept as separate evidence layers rather than blended together.
