Venue Evidence Register
A working register of what the current Chelmsford Rocks archive can say about important venues, what remains uncertain, and where the next useful evidence is likely to come from. It is deliberately narrower than a venue directory: the question here is how well is each venue evidenced?
| Venue | Current archive position | Evidence state | Open questions / next useful route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corn Exchange 1960s; demolished 1969 | The archive has a substantial 1960s event layer, including selected records for The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and others, plus a surviving oral-history research lead about the 1960s Chelmsford scene. | Strong event layer | Resolve individual date conflicts rather than treating the venue's whole chronology as settled. Compare surviving source-index wording with tickets, programmes, press and oral-history material. |
| Chancellor Hall 1970s punk / rock focus | A major 1970s venue in the rebuilt archive, with selected event records for The Clash, The Damned, The Vibrators, Buzzcocks, Generation X and The Undertones. An oral-history lead also points toward the Chelmsford punk scene. | Strong event layer | Check exact dates and supporting acts individually. The 29.0577 Clash source wording is retained as found rather than silently corrected. |
| Y Club Victoria Road / YMCA venue; later period | The surviving site material identifies a Y Club / YMCA venue layer with 1990s listings. The archive currently treats this as a venue identity that needs more detailed event-level work. | Developing | Build a dedicated venue record and separate the Y Club identity from other YMCA references unless a source explicitly connects them. |
| Civic Theatre | Existing Chelmsford Rocks material records touring shows including Genesis + Man, Osibisa, Groundhogs + Brewers Droop and Van der Graaf Generator + Medicine Head. New memorabilia MR-001 also supplies a Civic Theatre event lead, but its year is not printed. | Mixed | Use contemporary listings or press to date MR-001. Keep the undated Skin Alley / Hawkwind / Decameron object separate from confirmed event records until corroborated. |
| Odeon Baddow Road | Selected event records include Adam & The Ants and Ozzy Osbourne + Budgie, alongside surviving ticket material. | Selected records | Expand from selected events to a venue chronology, while retaining differences between ticket evidence and the old source index. |
| Army & Navy | The archive has a substantial 1990s–2002 venue layer, including promoter material and external oral-history research leads. | Developing record | Connect individual event claims to surviving source material and separate venue-history testimony from independently dated gig evidence. |
| Bassment | Retained in the broader Chelmsford venue coverage as a later live-music venue. | Coverage present | Prioritise dated event evidence: tickets, flyers, listings, photographs and contemporary press. A venue mention alone is not enough to establish a particular show. |
| Evoke | Retained in the later Chelmsford venue coverage. | Coverage present | Build an event-level source trail if surviving material can be recovered. |
| Galleywood Youth Centre | New memorabilia MR-002 records a Northern Mod & Soul Club event at Watchouse Road, with performers and times written on the surviving item. The year is not printed. | Undated object lead | Search local press, club material or another surviving copy for the missing year. Do not insert the item into a dated venue chronology yet. |
| YMCA Chelmsford / Tin Soldiers trail | New memorabilia MR-004 records The Gents / The Way Out at the YMCA, with Tin Soldiers Mod Society and “New Direction” National Tour wording. The year is not printed. | Undated object lead | Compare YMCA/Tin Soldiers listings and contemporary local press. Do not automatically equate this YMCA with the Y Club venue identity. |
Evidence routes by source type
Where & When
The surviving index is the broadest recovered event layer. It is valuable for discovery and comparison, but its entries retain their original uncertainty.
Search the source index →Selected event records
Curated event pages gather the strongest currently available details for individual shows and expose conflicts where they exist.
Open the Event Source Map →Archive sources
External archive material can add oral histories, papers and recordings, but catalogue descriptions and access status must remain visible.
Open External Archive Sources →Memorabilia
Supplied tickets, flyers and objects can preserve details that are absent from the old index. Undated items remain research leads until corroborated.
Open Memorabilia Cross-Reference →Archive access matters
Essex Archives Online describes every item in the archive, but the catalogue is not the same thing as a digitised copy of the record. The Essex Record Office says many documents and recordings have not been digitised; some sound recordings are available online, others are Searchroom-only because of copyright, and some have not yet been catalogued or digitised.
That distinction is important for this project: “not found online” is not treated as “does not exist”. The next research step may therefore be a catalogue search, a Searchroom visit, a copy/search request, or simply preserving an unresolved question until better access is available.

Next build targets
- Turn the Y Club / YMCA material into a dedicated venue evidence page without conflating venue identities.
- Build a Civic Theatre evidence trail around MR-001 and the existing selected events.
- Extend the Odeon and Chancellor Hall records from selected events toward source-linked venue chronologies.
- Keep every unresolved date visibly unresolved until a source supports the change.
