Wilko Johnson's Solid Senders — Chancellor Hall research

21 May 1978 is ticket-backed. A separate 28 May 1978 listing exists, but is not currently confirmed.

Archive status: the surviving Chancellor Hall ticket establishes Sunday 21 May 1978 as a confirmed Wilko Johnson's Solid Senders appearance. A separate later listing for 28 May 1978 carries a question mark in Punk Music Catalogue, so it is retained only as a research lead and is not counted as a second appearance.

Sunday 21 May 1978

Wilko Johnson's Solid Senders — Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford

This date is part of the archive's ticket-led Chancellor Hall record. The surviving ticket is transcribed in the Ticket Transcription Register as Sunday 21 May 1978, ticket no. 441.

Assessment: confirmed by surviving ticket, with independent gig listings also recording the date.

Sunday 28 May 1978?

Punk Music Catalogue's Chancellor Hall list contains a second entry: Pirates, Wilko Johnson's Solid Senders (?). The question mark is important: the source itself is signalling uncertainty.

No second Chelmsford ticket or contemporary advert has been located in the material currently assembled for the archive.

Assessment: research lead only. Do not count as a second appearance yet.

Evidence rule

This is another case where a venue gigography can tempt us to turn one confirmed show into two. The archive keeps the questionable 28 May entry because it may lead to something useful later, but it does not promote it to an event without better evidence.

The working hierarchy remains: surviving ticket or other primary artefact first; contemporary advert/newspaper next; later gigography as a lead.

Sources checked

Next evidence target: a second Wilko ticket, poster, local-paper advert, or first-hand recollection specifically tied to 28 May 1978.
