Folk Club Documentary Chronology
A combined chronology of the surviving Chelmsford Folk Club paper trail and the independently catalogued sound recordings. It deliberately distinguishes document dates from performance dates: a surviving newsletter or guest list is evidence that the document exists, not automatically evidence of a particular gig.
Documentary sequence
1977 — membership evidence
PAPER SA 30/2/3/4, Box 2 item 29 contains a Chelmsford Folk Club membership card dated 1977, alongside guest-list material for DJs and the Golden Fleece.
What this establishes: surviving membership/documentary material for 1977. It does not identify a particular night's performers.
August 1978 — DJs Clubroom
PAPER SA 30/2/3/4, Box 1 item 36 is catalogued as a DJs Clubroom guest list and newsletter, August 1978.
Separate recording trail: the surviving recording collection is described by the Record Office as covering Chelmsford Folk Club between 1978 and 1986. The existence of the August paper record should not be treated as proof of a matching tape unless a recording catalogue entry explicitly connects them.
1978 — Chelmsford Folk Club Christmas Special
RECORDING SA 30/6/94/1 is a surviving catalogue record for the 1978 Chelmsford Folk Club Christmas Special.
Evidence boundary: the catalogue trail establishes the recording, but the currently published evidence used here does not supply a reconstructed performer list for the whole evening.
December 1979 — newsletter
PAPER SA 30/2/3/4, item 38 contains a December 1979 newsletter.
PAPER Item 43 separately describes a 1979 newsletter including a brief history of the club at DJs.
Research value: the second item is particularly important because it is explicitly historical material, but its full contents are not reconstructed here.
Autumn 1981 — newsletter
PAPER SA 30/2/3/4, item 38 contains an Autumn 1981 newsletter.
Boundary: this is a surviving document period, not a claim that every event in Autumn 1981 has been recovered.
Spring & Summer 1982 — newsletters
PAPER SA 30/2/3/4, item 39 contains Spring 1982 and Summer 1982 newsletters.
18 July 1982 — Mick & Sarah Graves; Geoff & Penny Harris
RECORDING The surviving recording catalogue identifies this Chelmsford Folk Club session under SA 30/6/402/1.
Cross-reference: the Record Office's published research also identifies 18 July 1982 in its Chelmsford Folk Club material. Evidence Matrix keeps the recording evidence separate from the paper and oral-history trails.
17 October 1982 — Martin Carthy
RECORDING SA 30/6/425/1 preserves parts 2 and 4 of 4 of a Martin Carthy performance at Chelmsford Folk Club.
RESEARCH The Essex Record Office independently highlights the 17 October 1982 Martin Carthy recording in its published research. Essex Record Office published research
Survival note: the catalogue records parts 2 and 4 of 4; the missing parts are not reconstructed here.
7 November 1982 — Annie Harding / Chelmsford Morris
RECORDING SA 30/6/428/1 preserves parts 1 and 3 of 4. The catalogue identifies Annie Harding singing “Reynardine” and records a Chelmsford Morris 10th anniversary connection with three dances.
RESEARCH The Record Office's published research independently identifies the Annie Harding recording and the date. Essex Record Office published research
Midwinter & Summer 1983; Christmas 1983; Winter 1984
PAPER SA 30/2/3/4 items 40–41 preserve newsletter material for Midwinter 1983, Summer 1983, Christmas 1983 and Winter 1984.
Boundary: these are documentary periods. They are not converted into a list of gigs without the underlying programme or guest-list wording.
3 March 1985 — Simon & Bobbie Ritchie and others
RECORDING SA 30/6/653/1 preserves a recording including Simon and Bobbie Ritchie, with other named participants in the catalogue. The recording ends abruptly.
RESEARCH The Essex Record Office identifies Simon and Bobbie Ritchie performing “The March Hare” at Chelmsford Folk Club on this date. Essex Record Office published research
Summer & Autumn 1985 — British Legion Hall
PAPER SA 30/2/3/4 item 42 contains Summer 1985 and Autumn 1985 newsletters, explicitly identified with the British Legion Hall.
Venue significance: this is direct documentary support for the British Legion Hall phase of the venue trail; it is not treated as a complete programme.
22 December 1985 — East Anglian Dulcimers
RECORDING SA 30/6/712/1 preserves East Anglian Dulcimers at Chelmsford Folk Club, including Paul McCann and Jill Palmer-Swift.
RESEARCH The Essex Record Office highlights this recording in its published folk-club research. Essex Record Office published research
20 April 1986 — Seven Straw Braid / Chelmsford Assembly
RECORDING SA 30/6/736/1 preserves part 1 of 2 of Seven Straw Braid performing “Chelmsford Assembly” at Chelmsford Folk Club, introduced by Jill Palmer-Swift.
RESEARCH The Record Office identifies the recording and date in its published research. Essex Record Office published research
Survival note: only part 1 of 2 is catalogued in the surviving record used here.
What the chronology now shows
Paper continuity
The surviving paper trail gives documentary anchors from 1977 through the British Legion Hall material of 1985, with named periods at Golden Fleece, DJs Clubroom and British Legion Hall.
Sound continuity
The independently catalogued recordings give specific performance dates from 1978 through 1986, while retaining incomplete tape survival where the catalogue says parts are missing.
Independent confirmation
Published Essex Record Office research independently highlights several of the recording dates and identifies a surviving DJs Clubroom programme naming the Watersons, Seven Straw Braid and Roaring Jelly. Essex Record Office published research
Still unresolved
The page does not attempt to turn every newsletter, guest list or oral-history recollection into a dated gig. Exact dates, complete programmes and missing recording parts remain research targets where the surviving catalogue does not provide them.
