Venue Dossiers

A dossier is deliberately different from a venue description. It gathers the strongest current evidence for one venue, separates dated event records from wider source context, and leaves open questions visible.

Archive rule: catalogue descriptions, oral histories, memorabilia, tickets, posters and event pages are different evidence classes. A source can establish that a venue was active without establishing a particular gig date. The dossier does not silently upgrade one evidence class into another.
VenueCurrent dossier statusWhat the dossier can establish nowOpen boundary
Corn ExchangeBest developedSelected 1965 and 1967 event records plus the fixed 1969 demolition boundary. The surviving wider programme should not be reconstructed as a complete gig list without individual source support.
Chancellor HallStrong selected recordMultiple dated punk/new-wave and later event records; independent oral-history context. The venue's much larger ticket/flyer/photograph layer still needs record-by-record extraction.
OdeonDevelopingSelected 1980 event records plus an independent ERO oral-history catalogue entry discussing the venue.Needs expansion from the existing ticket/event layer rather than assumption from oral history.

Corn Exchange

Dated records already on site

The Who — 23 January 1965

Jimmy Nicol — 3 April 1965

Alex Harvey Soul Band — 4 September 1965

Pink Floyd — 23 September 1967

The current archive also carries the Jimi Hendrix / Soul Trinity record for 25 February 1967.

Historical boundary

The Corn Exchange is treated here as a 1960s venue. The Essex Record Office's Chancellor project records that the Corn Exchange on Tindal Square was demolished in 1969 for the High Chelmer redevelopment.

What remains open

The broader source material points to a substantial beat, blues, soul and R&B programme. That is useful scene context, but the dossier does not convert every remembered or indexed act into an individual dated event.

Chancellor Hall

Dated records already on site

The Clash — 27 May 1977

The Vibrators — 26 June 1977

Buzzcocks / The Slits / John Cooper Clarke — 12 March 1978

Generation X — 2 April 1978

The Undertones — 3 June 1979

The separate 7 July 1977 Vibrators entry remains separate, as does the later Primal Scream and Dr Feelgood material.

Independent oral-history context

Essex Archives Online catalogue record SA 15/1/4/4/1 describes Paul Cleary's oral history of Chelmsford popular music. The catalogue summary explicitly covers his first gig at Chancellor Hall in 1974, later Chancellor Hall gigs, local bands and the influence of punk.

This corroborates the venue's importance as a scene context, but the catalogue summary is not being used to manufacture additional dates.

Research boundary

The current site knows that a much larger Chancellor Hall ticket, flyer, advert and photograph layer survives. The next research job is extraction and comparison of those individual records.

Odeon

Current event layer

Ozzy Osbourne + Budgie — 22 October 1980

Adam & The Ants — 13 December 1980

These are selected surviving event records, not a claim to a complete Odeon chronology.

Independent archive lead

ERO catalogue record SA 15/1/4/4/1 includes Paul Cleary's oral-history material on XTC at the Odeon, gigs at the Odeon and Chancellor Hall, and the wider Chelmsford popular-music scene.

Next useful action

Build the Odeon dossier from individual tickets, posters and contemporary listings first, then use oral-history material to add context. Keep memory and catalogue summary separate from dated event evidence.

Civic Theatre

Selected event layer

28 February 1972 — Genesis + Man is preserved as an advertised Civic Theatre show. Existing archive material also records Osibisa, Groundhogs + Brewers Droop and Van der Graaf Generator + Medicine Head at the theatre.

New memorabilia lead

MR-001 is the surviving ticket/object for Skin Alley / Hawkwind / Decameron at the Civic Theatre. The ticket gives the day, Sunday, and a 7.30 start, but the year is not printed.

Open the memorabilia evidence register →

Research boundary

The Civic Theatre programme should be reconstructed from individual advertisements, tickets, programmes and contemporary listings. MR-001 remains an undated lead rather than a promoted event record.

Y Club / YMCA trail

Y Club evidence

The venue index places the Y Club on Victoria Road and preserves a 1990s listing layer including touring acts such as The Cranberries, Shed Seven, Feeder, Embrace, Idlewild and Muse.

This is a venue/listing layer, not yet a complete event chronology.

Separate YMCA object

MR-004 records The Gents / The Way Out at the YMCA, Wednesday 29 May, 8.00–11.15, £2.50, with Tin Soldiers Mod Society and “New Direction” National Tour wording. The year is not printed.

Identity rule

The shared YMCA name is not enough to merge the two branches. The dossier keeps Y Club and the MR-004 YMCA reference separate until a source explicitly connects them.

Army & Navy

Primary surviving source

The current venue page is based on Sean Hudson's dated first-person interview of 18 May 2021. It describes the move into promotion, the 1992 Heavy Metal Kids booking, the venue's growth and the closing in October 2002.

Open the full Army & Navy source page →

What the interview contributes

The interview names a substantial run of punk, rock, indie, ska and metal bookings, including Glen Matlock, UK Subs, The Exploited, 999, Oasis, Kula Shaker, Stereophonics, Idlewild, Elastica, Feeder and local acts.

These names are preserved as interview content, not silently upgraded to independently verified event records.

Next useful action

Extract individual dates from tickets, flyers, contemporary listings and other independent sources where they survive. Then cross-reference those records against the promoter interview.

How these dossiers should grow

  1. Extract a dated object or catalogue-backed event.
  2. Record the exact source wording and evidence class.
  3. Cross-check against independent archive material where available.
  4. Keep contradictions visible rather than choosing a convenient version.
  5. Only promote a research lead into the main event chronology when the evidence supports it.

Essex Archives Online describes every catalogue item but notes that many records are not digitised. Original documents and recordings can be consulted in the Searchroom, and ERO also offers copying/search services when material is not available online.
