What the ticket says

The surviving ticket is printed “CHANCELLOR HALL, CHELMSFORD — RADIO STARS PLUS SUPPORT — SUNDAY, 3rd SEPTEMBER, 1978 at 8 p.m.” It also states that doors open at 7.45 p.m. and carries ticket number 333.

Why this is now a dated event record

Unlike the yearless Penetration and Buzzcocks tickets, this Radio Stars ticket actually prints the year. The archive therefore records the appearance as 3 September 1978 rather than inferring the year from the calendar.

Independent surviving gig indexes also list Radio Stars at Chancellor Hall on 3 September 1978. The Southend Punk Rock History timeline records the same date and venue, and the Radio Stars tour listing independently records the Chancellor Hall appearance.

People who remember Radio Stars

Alongside the surviving ticket, three people who were there later left comments about the Radio Stars appearance. These are preserved as first-hand recollections, not treated as objective proof of how the audience reacted.

Duncan Egleton

“I saw them and if I remember correctly they were booed off, I think they were quite a few years older than the audience and seemed just to be hanging on the coat tails of punk. They did bring out a decent LP though ‘Songs for swinging lovers’ which if you listen to it now, sounds good and of the era.”

Julian Dench

“You are both correct - I was also there. I liked the album.”

Alistair Gordon

“I remember seeing them although I don't remember them being booed they weren't bad the great John Peel liked them and i'm sure they did a couple of sessions for his show not bad album and some decent if not outstanding singles”

Archive note

The comments agree that the contributors saw Radio Stars at the gig and that the album had merit, while Duncan Egleton remembers the band being booed and Alistair Gordon does not. That difference is preserved rather than resolved.

The album title appears in Duncan Egleton's comment as Songs for Swinging Lovers. The recollections are kept as memories and opinions; the ticket remains the documentary evidence for the date and venue.
