Chancellor Hall · repeat-appearance research

Penetration — Chancellor Hall appearances

Archive position

The Penetration record has changed as stronger Chelmsford evidence has emerged. The archive now separates 12 January 1978, supported by a surviving ticket accepted as genuine and a first-hand report that a friend attended; 12 November 1978, supported by independent secondary gig listings but not yet matched to a surviving ticket in this collection; and 13 May 1979, supported by a surviving ticket and contemporary corroboration. The earlier 5 March 1978 listing remains a research lead rather than a confirmed appearance.

12 January 1978 — Penetration / Cyanide

Established by physical ticket evidence. The site owner did not attend this show, but reports that a friend did and confirms that the ticket is correct. Punk Music Catalogue and the Penetration specialist gig list also carry the date. The physical ticket and local first-hand knowledge are the decisive archive evidence here.

5 March 1978 — reported, not confirmed

Southend Punk Rock History lists Penetration at Chancellor Hall on 5 March 1978, while Punk Music Catalogue gives a larger bill including Advertising, Menace, Penetration and Sham 69. The conflicting line-up evidence and absence of a matched Chelmsford primary artefact mean the archive does not count this as confirmed.

12 November 1978 — strong secondary record

Punk Music Catalogue lists Penetration with Cyanide at Chancellor Hall on 12 November 1978. Bored Teenagers independently gives the same date and venue. The Penetration specialist gig list also records 12 November. This is stronger than a single database entry, but it is still kept below ticket-backed status until a Chelmsford ticket, advert, poster, photograph or first-hand memory is matched.

13 May 1979 — ticket-backed

The surviving ticket reads Sunday 13 May. Calendar checking and contemporary Record Mirror evidence identify the year as 1979. This remains a confirmed Penetration Chancellor Hall appearance and is kept separate from the 1978 records.

What the archive is learning

Penetration is a good example of why repeat-appearance research matters. A simple “Penetration played once” entry would now be demonstrably incomplete. At the same time, the archive will not turn every later gig-list entry into a confirmed event. Each date keeps its own evidence level.

The working hierarchy remains: surviving primary artefact → contemporary corroboration → first-hand memory → later specialist gigography. Where sources disagree, the disagreement stays visible.
