1978 Sunday Sweep

A working list of Sunday Chancellor Hall entries that have appeared in the surviving venue lists. The purpose is not to declare every online listing true. It is to identify the next dates worth testing against tickets, adverts, photographs, newspaper listings and first-hand memories.

Archive rule: the calendar is a checking tool, not proof. A Sunday date can help identify a likely year, but an event only moves into the established chronology when another evidence layer supports it.

Established or strongly supported

22 January 1978 — Tyla Gang

Strong contemporary Record Mirror tour evidence names Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford. The date is a Sunday and is included here as a strong booking record, not ticket-backed proof.

5 February 1978 — Tonight

Strong contemporary Record Mirror tour evidence names Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford. Sunday calendar date agrees with the venue pattern.

26 February 1978 — The Radiators from Space

The band's own published history records Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford on this date.

12 January 1978 — Penetration / Cyanide

Surviving ticket accepted as genuine. The site owner did not attend, but reports that a friend attended and confirms the ticket is correct. The appearance is now treated as established physical evidence.

12 March 1978 — Buzzcocks / The Slits / John Cooper Clarke

Surviving ticket evidence and independent listings converge.

2 April 1978 — Generation X / The Jolt

Independently documented Chancellor Hall appearance.

9 April 1978 — Siouxsie & The Banshees / Solid Waste

Established secondary evidence in the archive; no ticket currently matched.

26 February 1978 — The Radiators from Space

The band’s own published 1978–79 history records Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford on 26 February. No ticket currently matched.

28 February 1978 — The Enid

Strong contemporary Record Mirror booking evidence dated 25 February 1978. This is a Tuesday and is therefore not part of the Sunday pattern.

28 April 1978 — Whirlwind

Strong contemporary Record Mirror tour evidence names Chelmsford Chancellor Hall on 28 April. No ticket currently matched.

7 May 1978 — Rikki & The Last Days Of Earth

Strong contemporary Record Mirror tour evidence dated 25 April 1978 names Chelmsford Chancellor Hall on 7 May. The separate 30 April Rikki entry remains uncertain.

21 May 1978 — Wilko Johnson's Solid Senders

Surviving ticket-backed appearance. A separate 28 May listing remains uncertain and is not merged with this event.

3 September 1978 — Radio Stars

Surviving ticket No. 333 prints the date, venue and time. The archive treats this as the only confirmed Radio Stars Chancellor Hall appearance; a January listing remains a research lead.

15 October 1978 — 999 / Razar

Established secondary evidence from more than one independent gig-history source. No surviving ticket has yet been matched.

22 October 1978 — Sore Throat / Deep Throats

Established secondary record. The site owner has also recorded first-hand attendance at this show.

18 June 1978 — Johnny Cougar

Strong contemporary evidence: Music Week 3 June 1978 gives Chelmsford–Chancellor Hall on 18 June in Johnny Cougar's tour itinerary. No ticket currently matched.

Research leads to test

16 April 1978 — Radiators From Space

Listed in the Punk Music Catalogue venue chronology, but still awaiting a ticket, contemporary advert, photograph or first-hand Chelmsford evidence.

30 April 1978 — Rikki & The Last Days Of Earth

The venue chronology and the band gigography both leave this date uncertain; the same date also appears as Bradford Royal Standard in the band itinerary. It remains a disputed research lead and is not merged with the stronger 7 May appearance.

5 March 1978 — Penetration

Listed by several secondary sources, but not promoted here as an established appearance. The Penetration specialist list itself warns that some entries are duplicated or represent shows whose outcome could not be established. A contemporary advert, ticket or local newspaper source would be useful.

29 January 1978 — Radio Stars

Appears in secondary Chancellor Hall lists. User's own memory is that Radio Stars played Chelmsford only once, and the surviving ticket proves 3 September 1978. January therefore remains a conflicting research lead rather than a second appearance.

17 September 1978 — Tanz Der Youth

Strong contemporary evidence: Record Mirror of 16 September 1978 names Chelmsford Chancellor Hall on the Sunday of the tour, with the venue chronology independently agreeing. Still not ticket-backed.

24 September 1978 — The Lurkers

Listed in the Punk Music Catalogue venue chronology. Primary evidence still needed before adding it to the established chronology.

1 October 1978 — Doll By Doll / Ultravox

Listed in the Punk Music Catalogue venue chronology. Kept as a research lead pending a ticket, advert, photograph or independent contemporary source.

8 October 1978 — The End / Enid discrepancy

Contemporary Record Mirror names The End at Chancellor Hall on 8 October; a later venue chronology says Enid. The bill remains unresolved pending local/primary evidence.

12 November 1978 — Penetration / Cyanide

A separate advertised appearance. It remains distinct from the 12 January ticket and the 13 May 1979 ticket-backed appearance.

3 December 1978 — Pere Ubu / Human League

Contemporary Record Mirror names a Pere Ubu booking at Chelmsford Chancellor Hall on 3 December. The Human League pairing comes from the later venue chronology and remains to be locally confirmed.

Why the sweep matters

The archive is now finding the same pattern repeatedly: a venue list can reveal a possible date, but the physical archive and local memories can overturn, confirm or split those entries. The 12 January Penetration show is a good example — a friend's attendance and the surviving ticket turn what looked like a bare online listing into a much stronger local record.

The same caution applies to disputed entries such as X-Ray Spex on 4 June 1978. That date is still not counted as confirmed because the available evidence conflicts with the local first-hand memory and other 1978 gig chronologies.
