The Undertones — Two Chancellor Hall Appearances in 1979
The archive now records two separate Undertones appearances at Chancellor Hall in the same year. They are deliberately kept as separate events because the supporting evidence points to two different dates and support bills.
11 March 1979
Support: The Deep Throats.
Evidence: contemporary Record Mirror tour notice, surviving “Undertones Branch Out” tour cutting listing Chelmsford Chancellor Hall (11), independent gig listings, and first-hand comments from Ken Wrigley of The Deep Throats.
3 June 1979
Support: Shake.
Evidence: surviving Chancellor Hall ticket No. 021 printed “Sunday, June 3rd”, calendar matching to 1979, and independent listings confirming the appearance.
Why they must remain separate
The March evidence names The Deep Throats as support and is tied to the Undertones' March promotional tour. The June ticket is a different surviving artefact with its own ticket number and support listing. Nothing in the current evidence suggests these are the same show, so the archive does not merge them.
The fact that both dates fall in 1979 is useful rather than inconvenient: it demonstrates why an old catalogue label such as “Undertones 1978 Ticket” should not be trusted without checking the ticket wording and calendar.
First-hand evidence
Ken Wrigley of The Deep Throats recalls that his band supported The Undertones in March to promote their single, describing it as “a blinding night”, and remembers having a beer with Fergal at the Lion and Lamb before going on stage.
Archive rule
A remembered second appearance is treated as a research lead. Each date is then tested against tickets, contemporary advertising, tour notices and independent records. Once supported, appearances remain separate unless the evidence clearly demonstrates that they are the same event.
