The Clash — Evidence & Memory Crosswalk

Chancellor Hall, Chelmsford · 27 May 1977 · White Riot Tour

How to read this page: documentary/object evidence and personal recollection are deliberately kept in different lanes. A recollection can preserve atmosphere, behaviour and personal experience without independently proving every detail remembered.

Three first-hand voices

  • Ash — July 2010: remembers the anger of the bands, The Prefects, Subway Sect, The Slits and The Clash, and the lasting impact of seeing The Clash locally.
  • Duncan Egleton — June 2010: remembers the build-up, local punks and Teds, the dark sweaty hall, dub reggae between bands, The Slits' “New Town”, The Clash's “White Riot” and “Police and Thieves”, and the musical effect of the night.
  • Maurice Hyde: remembers dressing as a punk with Barry Magowan, the walk into town, the Lion and Lamb / “The Animals”, the soft-drinks bar, The Slits, rumours of Teds outside, and The Clash as a turning point.

Date discrepancy — now resolved at archive level

An older archive record had carried 29 May 1977. The surviving ticket and Maurice Hyde's Flickr source identify 27 May 1977. The selected event record therefore uses 27 May 1977. The older 29 May date is retained only as a legacy-source discrepancy, not as the current event date.
