Early evidence / source comparison
Folk Club Early Scene — Corroboration
A source-comparison page for the early Chelmsford Folk Club trail. The aim is not to manufacture a 1960s gig list, but to identify which parts of the early-scene picture are independently supported and which remain oral-history leads.
Current conclusion: independent Essex Record Office material supports the existence of Chelmsford Folk Club in the early 1960s, while Don Budds's later oral history supplies the specific recollection that the Folk Five's first Chelmsford Folk Club appearance was in the early 1960s. Neither source currently supplies an exact date for that Folk Five appearance.

Chelmsford Folk Club's lifespan
The Essex Record Office's Folk in Essex: Part One describes Chelmsford Folk Club as running from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s. It also reproduces a surviving Chelmsford Folk Club programme from the SA 30/2/3/4 collection.
This independently supports the broad early-1960s existence of the club, without identifying a particular night.

Oral history
Don Budds / Folk Five
SA 30/7/1/27/1 — interview with Don Budds, 18 July 2002.
The catalogue records Budds's recollection that the Folk Five's first gig at Chelmsford Folk Club was in the early 1960s. It also records that the group performed elsewhere around Chelmsford and local folk clubs.

Separate recording evidence
The Folk Five, 1964
SA 30/1/37/1 preserves a 1964 compilation of Folk Five performances recorded by John Gomer at the Recreation Hotel, Colchester Folk Club.
This is useful independent evidence that the group were active in the period, but it is not a Chelmsford performance and is therefore not being added to the Chelmsford event index.

Why the 1964 recording is kept separate
The surviving Folk Five recording is a particularly useful cross-check because it proves the group existed and were performing in 1964. But its catalogue description places the recording at the Recreation Hotel, Colchester Folk Club. It would be historically misleading to use it as if it were a Chelmsford recording.
The archive therefore uses it as corroborating context, not as a Chelmsford event.
Research trail from here
- Look for early Chelmsford programmes, membership cards or contemporary notices in the SA 30/2/3/4 Folk Club papers.
- Check whether Essex Folk News contains early Chelmsford listings; the Record Office's later research notes that clubs across the county were documented in this publication.
- Keep the Folk Five recording, Don Budds interview and Chelmsford programme evidence as separate source types.
- Only promote the early-scene lead into a dated event record if a source supplies enough date-specific evidence.
