Folk Club Early Scene — Source Trail

A source-by-source trail for the earliest Chelmsford Folk Club evidence currently identified. This page deliberately keeps broad club history, oral recollection, surviving recordings and later interpretation separate.

Evidence rule: a source can establish that the club existed, that a person or group was active, or that a particular recording survives without establishing an exact Chelmsford gig date. The archive does not promote a lead into a dated event unless the evidence supports that level of detail.

Broad club history

SA 30/2/3/4

The Essex Record Office's published Folk in Essex: Part One describes Chelmsford Folk Club as running from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s and reproduces a surviving club programme from the collection.

Supports: broad lifespan and existence of surviving contemporary club material.

Does not by itself establish: the date of any particular early performance.

Oral history

SA 30/7/1/27/1 — Don Budds

Interviewed 18 July 2002. Budds recalls moving to Chelmsford in 1955, performing with the Folk Five and says their first gig at Chelmsford Folk Club was in the early 1960s.

Supports: a specific recollection linking the Folk Five to Chelmsford Folk Club in the early 1960s.

Still unknown: exact date, programme and supporting acts.

Contemporary-period recording

SA 30/1/37/1 — Folk Five

A 1964 compilation of Folk Five performances recorded by John Gomer at the Recreation Hotel, Colchester Folk Club.

Supports: the Folk Five were active in 1964.

Does not establish: a Chelmsford performance. The catalogue places these recordings at Colchester Folk Club.

Later oral-history context

SA 30/7/1/7/1 — Colin Cater

Colin Cater's interview records his involvement with Chelmsford Folk Club and recalls the club's changing locations and character, including the Three Cups, Golden Fleece and DJ Clubroom.

Supports: later oral-history context for the club and its social/venue history.

Use carefully: this is not evidence for a specific early-1960s Folk Five date.
