Venue research / evidence layers
Folk Club Venue Trail
A research view of the places associated with Chelmsford Folk Club. It separates later recollections about moves between venues from the surviving paper trail, and does not turn an approximate recollection into an exact venue date.
Evidence boundary: the venue sequence below is assembled from surviving catalogue descriptions and oral-history evidence. Where a source gives an approximate period or a recollection rather than a dated contemporary record, that uncertainty is retained.
Current evidence trail
Early 1970s — oral history
Three Cups
Source: Colin Cater, SA 30/7/1/7/1
Cater's 1999 interview records his joining Chelmsford Folk Club and his recollection of the club moving to the Three Cups around 1970–71. The same interview continues with references to the Golden Fleece and DJs Clubroom.
This is a later recollection, not a contemporary venue notice.
Essex Archives catalogue
1970s — paper trail
Golden Fleece
Source: SA 30/2/3/4
The surviving collection contains a Chelmsford Folk Club guest list and club crossword competitions for the Golden Fleece. A separate item records a 1977 Chelmsford FC guest list at the Golden Fleece.
This is direct surviving paper evidence, but the catalogue description does not supply a complete run of dates.

Late 1970s–1980s — paper + recordings
DJs Clubroom
Source: SA 30/2/3/4 and later recording records
The collection contains a DJs Clubroom guest list, an August 1978 newsletter, further guest lists, and newsletters through 1984. Essex Record Office's published research also shows a surviving Chelmsford Folk Club programme identifying DJs Clubroom on Rainford Road.
The recording collection from 1978 onward therefore sits within a documented DJs Clubroom paper trail.

1985 — surviving paper evidence
British Legion Hall
Source: SA 30/2/3/4
The catalogue specifically identifies Summer and Autumn 1985 newsletters as relating to the British Legion Hall, followed by Spring–Summer material and the “Colin had a dream....” item.
This provides a firm documentary anchor for the later venue period without assuming the exact date of every move.

What the venue trail does — and does not — prove
- The sources support a changing Chelmsford Folk Club venue history rather than a single permanent location.
- Colin Cater's recollection gives an approximate early-1970s Three Cups move; it should remain labelled oral history.
- The Golden Fleece and DJs Clubroom are directly represented in the surviving paper collection.
- The British Legion Hall is explicitly identified in the 1985 catalogue description.
- None of these sources, by themselves, supplies a complete night-by-night venue chronology.
External memory lead — not yet corroborated
A discussion on Mudcat recalls a Chelmsford Folk Club room in Tindal Street, with a contributor remembering the White Hart and early/mid-1960s performers. This is retained only as an unverified research lead; it is not used as a Chelmsford event or venue fact in the archive.

Next research targets
The strongest next step is to look for contemporary programmes, newsletters or other paper records that can tighten the approximate early-1970s venue sequence and test the Tindal Street memory independently. The surviving SA 30/2/3/4 material and Essex Folk News references are the most promising routes.
