Essex Folk News Trail

A focused research trail for Essex Folk News, the publication that can potentially tighten the Chelmsford Folk Club chronology beyond the surviving memories and catalogue descriptions already mapped elsewhere in this archive.

Evidence boundary: the existence of the Essex Folk News run is established. This page does not pretend that individual issues have been searched unless the surviving source material or published Record Office research actually identifies them. The trail therefore separates known publication coverage from issues still to inspect.

Why this matters

Independent contemporary trail

The Essex Record Office says that the many folk clubs across Essex were documented in Essex Folk News, catalogue reference LIB/PER 2/22/1-50. That makes the publication an especially valuable route for checking dates, venues and club activity independently of later oral history.

Useful for venue transitions

Our current Chelmsford venue sequence rests on a mixture of oral history and surviving papers. Essex Folk News offers a potential contemporary bridge between the approximate Three Cups memory, the Golden Fleece period, DJs Clubroom and the later British Legion Hall material.

Not yet a gig database

A reference to a club in the publication does not automatically prove that every listed act performed. Any future extraction should preserve the wording and distinguish listings, reports, advertisements, club notices and retrospective material.

Research targets

Early 1960s

Look for the earliest Chelmsford Folk Club notices, programmes or reports. The club is independently placed in the early 1960s by Record Office research, while Don Budds remembers the Folk Five's first Chelmsford Folk Club gig in the early 1960s. The exact night and room remain unresolved.

c.1970–71

Search for evidence around the remembered move to the Three Cups. Colin Cater's oral history gives the approximate date; a contemporary notice could tighten it.

1970s venue sequence

Use issues to test the transition through Three Cups → Golden Fleece → DJs Clubroom, rather than assuming that the oral-history sequence represents immediate or exclusive venue changes.

Late 1970s–1980s

Cross-check DJs Clubroom listings against the surviving guest lists/newsletters and Jim Etheridge recordings, then look for the move into the British Legion Hall.

1985–86

Check whether Essex Folk News can connect directly with the dated SA 30/6 recordings, including the 1985 and 1986 surviving catalogue records already in this archive.

Late period

Look for evidence of the later YMCA period mentioned by Colin Cater and Sarah Graves. At present the archive deliberately does not assign a date from memory alone.

Method for future extraction

  1. Record the exact issue/reference before extracting a claim.
  2. Preserve the original wording where a notice is ambiguous.
  3. Separate advertisements/programme listings from reports of performances.
  4. Record venue names exactly as printed, then cross-reference variants such as DJs Clubroom / DJ Clubroom.
  5. Compare each finding with SA 30/2/3/4, oral histories and surviving recordings.
  6. Only promote a result into the main event layer when the evidence supports a specific event rather than merely a club listing.
