Folk Club Venue Source Ledger

A source-by-source ledger for the Chelmsford Folk Club venue reconstruction. It records what each surviving source actually contributes, what kind of evidence it is, and what it cannot establish on its own.

Evidence boundary: this ledger does not convert catalogue descriptions into the contents of documents that have not been inspected. “Survives” means the catalogue describes the item; it does not mean every date, performer or venue detail has been extracted.

Folk Clubs miscellaneous papers
Contemporary paper collection / catalogue descriptionGolden Fleece guest-list material; DJs Clubroom guest lists and newsletters; 1979 brief history; 1981–85 newsletters; British Legion Hall material in 1985.Exact dates printed on every surviving sheet, complete venue changeover dates, or a complete gig list.Inspect the original/digital items through Essex Record Office; prioritise the Golden Fleece/DJs material and 1981–85 newsletters.
SA 30/7/1/7/1
Colin Cater oral history
Oral history, 16 Apr 1999Remembers joining CFC, the Three Cups around 1970–71, Golden Fleece, DJs Clubroom, later British Legion Club and YMCA.Exact contemporary dates for each move; memory is approximate where the interview says “around”.Use as the remembered sequence; compare every venue transition with paper evidence.
SA 30/7/1/19/1
Sarah Graves oral history
Oral history, 1 Nov 1999Documents attending CFC as a teenager, singing 1975–78, and later running the club in the 1980s; mentions the DJ Discos room and closure in the late 1980s.It does not supply a complete dated venue chronology for the whole club's life.Keep alongside the paper trail; use transcript SA 30/7/1/19/3 where access permits.
Essex Record Office — Folk in Essex: Part ThreePublished archive research / contextual interpretationIdentifies Chelmsford Folk Club as a prominent Essex club and reproduces a programme identifying DJs Clubroom on Rainford Road, with named forthcoming acts. The reproduced programme does not, by itself, establish the first or last date of the DJs period.Use as independent published corroboration of the DJs location and club context.
Sources on Folk MusicPublished collection guideStates that Jim Etheridge recorded almost every CFC between 1978 and 1986 and describes the evening structure and recording practice. It is a collection guide, not a venue-by-venue chronology.Use it to interpret the surviving recording series and identify further catalogue items.
SA 30/6 recording seriesSurviving sound archiveProvides dated Chelmsford Folk Club performance evidence from the later period, including 1985 and 1986 recordings.Surviving recordings do not necessarily state the venue on every item, and absence of a recording does not prove absence of a club night.Cross-reference recordings with newsletters/programmes rather than inferring venue changes from recording dates alone.

What the sources agree on

DJs Clubroom

This is the strongest convergence: Colin Cater remembers DJs Clubroom; the paper collection contains DJs guest lists and newsletters; and Essex Record Office's published research reproduces a Chelmsford Folk Club programme identifying DJs Clubroom on Rainford Road.

Golden Fleece

The venue is supported by both Colin Cater's oral history and surviving Golden Fleece paper material in SA 30/2/3/4. The exact span still needs extraction from the originals.

British Legion Hall

The later period is anchored by surviving 1985 newsletter material identified in the catalogue. Sarah Graves's oral history independently covers the 1980s running of the club.

Where the ledger remains deliberately incomplete

Early 1960s

The existence of Chelmsford Folk Club in the early 1960s is supported by published Record Office research and oral-history material, but this ledger does not assign an exact room without a surviving contemporary source.

Three Cups

The current evidence is a remembered move around 1970–71. A dated programme, membership item, press notice or newsletter is still needed to turn that approximate memory into tighter chronology.

Later YMCA period

The YMCA remains a later oral-history reference without a dated contemporary item in the current evidence set.

Research priority

Highest-value next step: inspect SA 30/2/3/4 itself. Its catalogue description spans Golden Fleece, DJs Clubroom and British Legion Hall material and therefore offers the best chance of tightening the venue sequence from contemporary paperwork rather than retrospective memory.

Open SA 30/2/3/4 in Essex Archives Online

Essex Archives Online explains that its catalogue provides descriptions of archive items, while only some images and recordings are available online. The original material may therefore need to be consulted through the Record Office.
