Folk Club Venue Research Targets

A practical research list for tightening the Chelmsford Folk Club venue chronology. This page does not add new venue claims; it identifies which surviving source trails can answer which unresolved questions.

Research rule: an unresolved question stays unresolved until the surviving evidence actually answers it. The aim is to find a contemporary programme, newsletter, guest list, membership item or catalogue description that narrows a gap — not to manufacture a neat sequence from later recollection.

The strongest single source to inspect

SA 30/2/3/4 — Folk Clubs miscellaneous papers

This collection is unusually valuable because its Chelmsford material spans the venue sequence: Golden Fleece guest-list material; DJs Clubroom guest lists and an August 1978 newsletter; later newsletters through 1985; a 1979 brief history; and British Legion material. The catalogue description also identifies a 1977 Chelmsford FC guest list at DJs and another at the Golden Fleece, alongside a 1977 membership card.

What the oral history can — and cannot — do

Colin Cater

His 1999 interview is the key remembered sequence: Three Cups around 1970–71, Golden Fleece, DJs Clubroom, British Legion Club and later YMCA. It is especially useful for movement and experience, but approximate memories remain approximate.

SA 30/7/1/7/1

Sarah Graves

Her 1999 interview documents running Chelmsford Folk Club in the 1980s and is useful for the later period. It should be kept alongside, rather than substituted for, the contemporary newsletters.

Why archive access matters

The Essex Archives Online catalogue describes the holdings, but many original documents have not been digitised. The Record Office says that original documents can be accessed in its searchroom and that recordings from the Essex Sound and Video Archive are also available there. That means the next major improvement to this part of Chelmsford Rocks may come from reading the surviving originals, not from finding another secondary webpage.
